 aint Thomas More
School's comprehensive program is designed to prepare students
for admission to college as well as to provide students with
a structured environment in which sound study habits can be
developed.
Many of our students
enter Saint Thomas More School as learners who have demonstrated
evidence of intellectual ability, who may require an environment
to achieve academic success.
At Saint Thomas
More School, we pay special attention to the overall training
and development of students whose potential has not yet been
reached or whose progress has been impeded by poor self- concept,
weak study habits or inadequate scholastic background.
Each student takes
five or six academic subjects over the course of a six-period
class day. All courses are college preparatory in nature, and
prepare students for entrance into the best colleges and universities.
Great Expectations, Small Classes
Small classes are
a key aspect of Saint Thomas More School's program. With a typical
class size of approximately 12 students, every boy gets the
attention he needs.
Instructors teach not
only their subjects, but also the study skills needed to
master the academic material. The key ingredients of our study
skills program are:
Improved listening and note-taking skills
Effective time management
Concentration and memory techniques
Stress management
Improving performance on tests
Systematic study
A
Commitment to Your Success
At Saint Thomas
More School, we are fully committed to our students' success
in their studies. To this end, there is virtually no limit to
the amount of extra time and attention we will give a student
in order to support him and help him achieve that success.
Emphasis
On Extra Help
This is the time
set aside at the end of the class day during which teachers
remain in their classrooms in order to be accessible to their
students.
Evening Study Hall
is held for 2 hours a night, five nights a week, beginning on
Sunday. At that time, students prepare their assignments for
the next day's classes or work on long-term projects. The study
hall is monitored by a member of the faculty who also helps
students as needed.
Sometimes, in order
to succeed, a student may need more help than the regular system
of study skills, extra help and evening study hall provides.
The problem may be motivation or he may need more time to complete
his work.
In such a case,
the Academic Dean will take whatever steps necessary to insure
that the student makes the necessary improvements. This may
include a mandated schedule of extra help during the school
week; participation in academic campus, a weekend program of
extra study; or daily supervised study.
In addition, students
who need additional, regular one-on-one attention, can take
advantage of our Peer Tutoring Program, which enlists advanced
upperclassmen, to help fellow students with their homework.
If even more intensive help is necessary, the school will arrange
private tutoring.
The
Curriculum
The curriculum
is developed with the goal that all students enter Saint Thomas
More School to attain college acceptance. In order to be accepted
to college, a student must have a solid background in English
literature and composition, mathematics, and a broad exposure
to history, foreign language, science, and the arts. Based on
the results of the Stanford Test of Academic Skills, students
enrolling in our program are generally lacking basic language
arts and mathematics skills and the study habits necessary to
achieve these skills. Our curriculum, designed around required
courses desired by most colleges, enables a student to develop
those skills necessary for acceptance and success in college.
The minimum requirements

The Schedule
The daily schedule provides a structured environment in which
the mind, body and spirit can flourish.
The school day begins at Saint Thomas More School with optional
attendance at morning mass. Breakfast is followed by room inspection.
Classes and lunch take up the balance of the morning and early
afternoon. The last period of the school day is followed by
a special period when students may seek extra help with their
studies.
The afternoon is devoted to athletic programs in which all
students must participate.
Between the end of the class day, afternoon athletics and
evening study hall, there is sufficient time for students to
take part in extracurricular activities, visit the library,
or converse with friends and advisors.
Because they're taught to manage their time and energy efficiently,
students generally find time for themselves - to write or call
home, visit the school canteen for a snack or camaraderie, or
take a quiet walk on campus to be alone with their thoughts.
On weekends, our students enjoy leisure time, recreational
activities, trips and dances that are held in conjunction with
girls' schools.
