School Leadership Team

The purpose of the CSLA School Leadership Team Development Program is to develop the capacity of school teams to facilitate actions within their schools that lead to powerful learning for all members of the organization. This program offers seminars to school teams who are willing to make a long term commitment to facilitating the improvement of learning opportunities within their schools.

The Goal
Participants will engage in collaborative work to redesign learning opportunities and to reconstruct existing school structures that lead to continuous improvement in student learning.

What the School Leadership Team Program can do for you!
Initiating and implementing whole-school change necessitates a clear process towards specific goals. The program seminars provides avenues for discussing implementation of a change process, shaping the culture to support continuous improvement, working through resistance, creating a powerful vision, developing shared decision making, and designing a curriculum for powerful student learning.

Areas of Focus

1.

Creating a shared vision informed by research and practice that reflects the evolving goals of the school community and allows all students equal access to powerful learning experiences.

2.

Facilitating the ongoing process of developing a thinking, meaning-centered curriculum based on agreed-upon student outcomes.

3.

Developing and using an outcome-based approach in all aspects of the school's work.

4.

Guiding a school-wide change process that addresses the instructional challenges that have stimulated the school's restructuring efforts.

5.

Building the capacity of members of the school community to continually access where the school is in relation to its vision and to engage in a process of continuous improvement.

6.

Developing a repertoire of "culture-shaping tools" and use them to create a culture of professionalism, experimentation, and continuous improvement in school.

7.

Developing and using networks to gain access to resources, materials, and knowledge in specific and essential areas of focus for school change.

Participants will:

1.

Have access to CSLA resources

2.

Process new information in order to construct both personal meaning and shared understanding

3.

Create networking with other school teams

4.

Develop a shared knowledge base regarding comprehensive curricular and instructional restructuring efforts

5.

Create plans to involve members of the school community in achieving school-wide restructuring goals

6.

Expand your knowledge base and leadership skills

7.

Enhance your professional preparation and career next steps

8.

Use facilitative skills to enable others in the school community to collaborate in a school-wide change effort

9.

Build a capacity to accept responsibility and to share power and leadership

Program Assumptions:

1.

One person acting alone cannot achieve comprehensive change within a school.

2.

The development of shared knowledge, skills, and attitude that supports participatory leadership is necessary to undertake comprehensive school restructuring.

3.

The construction of a thinking, meaning-centered curriculum for all students in the school and the shaping of collaborative working conditions for all teachers in the school are powerful vehicles for school restructuring.

4.

Team efforts contribute to the building of teachers' self-reliance in carrying out restructuring efforts and to the institutionalizing of norms of continuous improvement.

Who Should Participate:
School Leadership Teams are composed of a consistent group of 6-12 members who are critical to the success of school improvement. Teams are generally 5 (small elementary schools) to 12 (large high schools) members. The principal must be a member of the team and must attend all seminars or the team does not attend. In addition, a district office administrator must also attend all SLT seminars (same D.O. administrator) and do intersession work. Other team members might be teachers, counselors, co-administrators, parents, central office staff, board members, and students (high school teams).

Length of Program:
The School Leadership Team Program consists of 6 seminar days per year for a two-year period.

Earn Credit Towards Tier II Administrative Credential!
Universities are now implementing the professional level program requirements for the recently revised Administrative Credential. One aspect of this new plan allows students to take up to 120 hours of their training in approved non-university programs. The California School Leadership Academy (CSLA) was the first non-university provider approved for this purpose.

Students interested in applying their School Leadership Team program attendance to their Tier II program should confer with their university advisor and then contact the San Joaquin Valley School Leadership Center.

For further clarification on credential requirements, please call your university advisor or Dr. Larry Birch, Commission on Teacher Credentialing at (916) 327-2967.
