Governor Inaugurates CHIP!
February 17, 2000.  Today, Governor Gary Locke, joined by advocates, legislators, and children from across the state, celebrated the start of Washington State's Children's Health Insurance Program.
The Governor (with a little help from kids across the state) spoke to the importance of kids getting health coverage.

CHIP will help some families right away.  These twins' parents wanted to insure their kids, but found that insurance was expensive and difficult to obtain.  Mom and Dad will rest easier now, knowing that their two girls are covered.

With the advent of CHIP, many children in working families will now be able to get health care.
At the end of the presentation, everyone gave CHIP a "hand" by signing off on the new program.  (Can you find Governor Locke's hand print?)

Other presenters at the event included Lyle Quasim, Secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and Representative Eileen Cody, Co-Chair, House Health Care Committee.
