Research Interest Areas
A diverse range of basic and applied research projects are underway
in the School. The studies encompass a variety of aspects of an overall
research program on Molecular Recognition in Biological Systems. They are,
however, viewed from different basic multidisciplinary perspectives.
Molecular Biology/Biochemistry (MBB)
- In this field, research interests of the faculty include investigations
in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, in which they study bacteria, viruses
and animal cells, and focus on such issues as gene structure and evolution,
regulation of gene expression, and structure-function relationships in
enzymes and membranes, including protein engineering. Their research uses
the latest recombinant DNA techniques such as gene cloning, PCR amplification,
DNA sequencing, in vitro mutagenesis and hybridization analysis.
Individual research interests
are described in the MBB
Doctoral Faculty Listing.
Cell Biology/Biophysics (CBB)
- A biophysical approach is primarily responsible for many recent spectacular
advances in biotechnology and in the studies of cell membranes, biological
macromolecules, neurobiology and enzyme mechanisms. Because of this, in
this School the biophysical approach becomes the interprogrammatic crossroad
for all investigators and provides the connective glue in investigating
structure/function relationships necessary for all other areas of research
interest.
Individual research interests
are described in the CBB
Doctoral Faculty Listing.
Library Resources
Every library of the region can now be accessed directly using your browser. Here is a short list of links that you may find useful:
Many useful databases and search opportunities can now be accessed through the UMKC Miller Nichols Library for all net users on campus and for faculty and students that dial-in through the CCTR dial-up modem pool:
- OVID Databases with browser access are provided through UMKC subscription:
- MEDLINE
- Current Contents
- Biological Abstracts
- CancerLit
- Core Biomedical
- Dissertation Abstracts
- ABI Inform
- CINAHL
- Compendex
- Newspaper Abstracts
- Periodical Abstracts
- MERLIN Library Catalog
- MERLIN (Missouri Education and Research Library Information Network) OnLine Catalog can be browsed but has also text access to these, and many additional resources: type at the CCTR $ prompt: kcmerlin
If you need on-line access to an encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, etcetera, try the following options:
Internet Resources for Biological Sciences
- BioLinks is an index of annotated biochemistry and molecular biology resources, divided into fifteen categories.
- BioMedNet has introduced a powerful new resource:
BioMedLink - a guide to
the biological and medical sites on the web. BioMedLink is an evaluated and annotated database of more than
4,000 valuable web resources for biological and medical
researchers. It is the product of a collaboration between
BioMedNet and Indiana University. Each entry is individually
reviewed and rated by an editorial board.
- Looking for useful research tools? Try The CMS Molecular Biology Resource.
This website is a compendium of electronic and Internet-accessible tools and resources for Molecular
Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Evolution, Biochemistry, and Biomolecular Modeling.
