First Aid Q&A

System dead after overclocking Pentium II CPU

If you experience a problem starting up the system (screen stays black) after experimenting with overclocking on your newly bought Pentium II CPU, then it might well be that your CPU is one of Intel`s latest `overclock-proof` CPU`s. In order to prevent overclocking, Intel has decided to fix the multiplier ratio of it`s CPU`s, limiting the overclock possibilities of its CPU`s only to raising the CPU busspeed.

When the multiplier ratio forced onto the CPU by the SeePU CPU configuration technology is different than the CPU will accept, the system will not start up and your monitor screen will stay black.

You can solve this problem by pressing the HOME key when you startup the system, causing it to go back to the default settings which will enable you to startup. (also clearing the CMOS with the jumper on the board will solve this problem)

System dead after BIOS updating (all boards)

If the system does not startup anymore after a BIOS update, then the most likely cause of this problem is that the BIOS ROM chip`s data has been corrupted either by a faulty BIOS ROM chip or by a failure during the update procedure.

  1. If the BIOS ROM chip is really defect, then the only solution is to change the BIOS ROM chip. In this case please contact your supplier or the nearest Chaintech representative office for a replacement chip. If you contact the Chaintech representative office they will ask you to send your BIOS ROM chip together with a return envelope (including stamps !) and an indication of your mainboard`s model name and PCB version so they can program a new BIOS ROM chip and send it back to you.
  2. If the BIOS ROM chip is not defect but only the data in it is corrupted, then sometimes the bootblock recover procedure may help to solve this problem. It will be necessary to have a copy of the original BIOS ready for this procedure. If this procedure does not work in your case, then please follow the guidelines in 1.
`Program files or part number does not match with your system !` message shows up during BIOS updating

There are a few BIOS updates which give this error message during updating. If you see this message during BIOS updating, please make sure once more that you are using the correct BIOS update for your model mainboard. If so, you may ignore the message and press `Y` to continue the updating procedure.

Problems with Intel IDE controller installation under Windows 95 (TX/LX boards)

When you are installing your Intel TX chipset or LX chipset based mainboard under Windows 95 (or OSR2), you will be confronted with some irregularities with the installation of the Intel IDE Controller. This is due to the fact that Windows 95 and Windows 95b (= OSR2) does not recognize the PIIX4 chip of the Intel chipset.

Your mainboard should have come with two disks, one of which will contain a program to solve this problem. If you don`t have the disks you can download the program here.

During the installation of Windows 95 (OSR2), ignore the error message(s) and continue the installation procedure. After the installation has finished, you will probably see `!` in front of the IDE Controller in the Device Manager. Use above described program to solve this problem.

N.B. some earlier TX based mainboards (5TDM0/1) mention a complex installation routine in the BIOS. This procedure is not necessary anymore ! Just use the above described program to solve this problem.)

If after the installation of the program you still have problems, you can use this program to correct any irregularities.

CD-ROM drive does not work anymore after installing the Intel Busmaster drivers

The Intel Busmaster drivers are known to cause lots of problems, especially with any non-standard IDE devices (removables, etc.) but also with some (especially older types) CD-ROM drives. If this happens to you, then all you can do to solve this problem is removing the busmaster drivers. For your information, the actual performance increase when using busmaster drivers is only significant under heavy multi-tasking environments.

Sometimes the problem can be solved by using the method described on Tom`s Hardware Guide in this file.
