The Madera County Board of Education consists of seven
(7) members
elected by the
electors of the seven trustee areas of the county. The term
of office for each
member is four (4) years. Except as allowed by the Brown
Act, board actions
take place in public session to give interested and
concerned citizens and
groups an opportunity to be heard. Meetings are
held on the second
Tuesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in Conference
Room A of the
Madera County Office of Education, 28123 Avenue 14, in
Madera. General

Grant Sturm - Area 1
Representing portions of the
Golden Valley Unified School District, Chawanakee,
Minarets, Bass Lake, Yosemite Union High School Districts. Member since November
1994. Term expires 2000.

Sara Wilkins (President) - Area 2
Representing portions of
Raymond, Bass Lake, Yosemite Union High and Coarsegold.
School Districts. Member since February 1989. Term expires 2002.

Leon Bass - Area 3
Representing Chowchilla and Chowchilla High School districts, Alview Dairyland
and portions of Madera Unified School District. Member since July 1973. Term
expires 2002.

Maxine Yocum - Area 4
Representing a portion of the Madera Unified School District. Member since
June 1987. Term expires 2000.

Cathie Bustos - Area
5
Representing a portion of the Golden Valley Unified and Madera Unified School
Districts. Member since March 1998. Term expires 2000.

Harry Nabors - (Vice President) Area
6
Representing the area of Madera Unified School District. Member since October
1996. Term expires 2002.

Bobby Thatcher - Area 7
Representing the areas of Madera Unified School District. Member Since
December 1983. Term expires 2000.
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BOARD
The Madera County Board of
Education is a duly elected governing board
deriving its power from the Constitution and action of the Legislature of
the State of California, (Constitution, Art. IX. Sec. 1 and Education Code,
Div. 1, Chapter 1). The County Board of Education shall be bound by the
laws and regulations as set forth in the California Education Code and
as it is amended by the California legislature from time to time.
The Madera County Board of Education will:
* adopt rules and regulations for its own
government not inconsistent with the
laws of California
* keep a record of its proceedings
* review and approve the annual County
School Service Fund Budget of the County
Superintendent of Schools before its sub-
mission to the Superintendent of Public
Instruction
* perform functions as provided elsewhere
in the Education Code
The Board of Education members work with the County Superintendent
of Schools
by:
* giving the county superintendent full
administrative authority for properly
discharging the superintendent professional
goals
* having the superintendent present at all
meetings of the board
* referring all complaints to the proper
administrative office and by discussing
them at regular meetings only after
failure of administrative solution
The Board of Education has the responsibility to hear interdistrict
transfer and expulsion appeals. Each appeal is examined and reviewed
on an individual basis.
The Madera County Board of Education also serves as the Madera
County Committee on School District Organization. The County
Committee functions within the rules and regulations established
by the legislature and its own policies and procedures. The Committee
may respond to petitioners and school district governing boards.
The Board is actively involved in the Madera County School Boards
Association, the California County School Boards of Education,
California School Boards Association, as well as other local community
services agencies.
