SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES


Communications Assistant

 

DATES: Approximately May 15 - August 30, 2000 (approximately 12 tournaments)

ASSOCIATION: The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) is dedicated to
the development of young men and women through competitive junior golf. The
association is the largest organization of its kind with a membership of
more than 4,800 juniors from 50 states and 25 foreign countries. More than
125 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA TOURS and have
more than 200 Tour victories to their credit. AJGA alumni include Phil
Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, David Duval, Justin Leonard, Kelli
Kuehne, Michelle McGann, and Dottie Pepper. In 2000, the AJGA will conduct
55 tournaments in 30 states and Canada.

DESCRIPTION: The AJGA is looking for qualified applicants to serve as
tournament information assistants. The interns will travel extensively
throughout the United States during the three-month internship and will
help conduct aproximately 12 junior golf tournaments. Tournament
information assistants are responsible for performing all on-site
communications and media relations duties. Interns will prepare each
tournament's printed materials (i.e., tournament information, pairings,
post-tournament story and agate). Interns are also responsible for
tournament photography and distributing tournament results to local and
national media (E-mail/modem/fax) as well as updating tournament results on
the AJGA's Web site. A total of eight communications interns will be hired.
Interns will be assigned to four teams of six interns.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Basic golf knowledge
  • Experience in sports information or media relations
  • Excellent news writing and editing skills, with the ability to work
    under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of IBM computers and Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access
  • Ability to work and communicate for long hours in a team
    atmosphere, willingness to take active leadership role
  • Photography and Web site maintenance experience a plus

    Polo Sport for the women); in addition, each
    intern will receive two pairs of Foot-Joy golf teaching shoes

  • Visit and on a limited basis play some of the tournament golf

  • Opportunity to meet the future stars of the PGA and LPGA Tours;
    seven of the 12 U.S. Ryder Cup team members were AJGA alumni (Tiger
    Woods, Davis Love III, David Duval, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Jim
    Furyk, and Jeff Maggert)
  • Potential to position yourself for full-time employment with the
    AJGA; two-thirds of the AJGA's current full-time staff of 30 went
    through the AJGA's internship program

WEEKLY STIPEND: $175 PER WEEK. (All tournament-related expenses are paid by
the AJGA).

Tournament Operations Assistant

 

DATES: Approximately May 15 – September 4, 2000 (between 11 – 13 tournaments).

ASSOCIATION: The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) is dedicated to the development of young men and women through competitive junior golf. The AJGA has built the reputation of providing the best exposure vehicle to gain college golf scholarships. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, David Duval, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Kelly Robbins, Michelle McGann, and Kelli Kuehne. The AJGA is the largest organization of its kind with a membership of more than 4,800 juniors from all 50 states and 27 foreign countries. In 2000, the AJGA plans to conduct 58 championships and 32 qualifiers in 31 states and Canada (Ontario and Alberta).

DESCRIPTION: The internship requires extensive travel continuous over three months, is demanding, but at the same time very rewarding. Interns will learn how to professionally conduct a golf tournament from start to finish. Responsibilities include: Golf course set-up and preparation, on-course rules officiating, tournament function, signage, and display set-up, starting and scoring of groups, post-round results, public and media relations, public speaking, maintain and inventory tournament equipment (including computers, printers, video and 35mm cameras). A total of 16 interns will be hired. Interns will be assigned to four teams of six.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic golf knowledge
  • Ability to work and communicate in a team atmosphere over a long work day
  • Willingness to take active leadership role
  • Highly motivated
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills
  • Possess the stamina and will to work long hours with physical lifting of tournament equipment
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to drive tournament van and trailer

  • Staff uniforms provided for all interns (Polo Ralph Lauren). In addition, each intern will receive golf teaching shoes and sneakers.
  • Conduct championships at some of the country’s premier golf facilities including; English Turn Golf & Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, Dallas Athletic Club, Grayhawk Golf Club, Oak Tree Country Club, Prairie Dunes Golf Club, Westin Innisbrook Resort, Turnberry Isle Resort & Club, DuPont Country Club, and Northwood Club.
  • On a limited basis, there are opportunities to play the competition courses.
  • Opportunity to meet the future stars of the PGA and LPGA TOURS. Seven Ryder Cup competitors are AJGA alumni.
  • Opportunity to work closely with corporate sponsors, host professionals, local tournament chairmen, and superintendents.
  • Potential to position yourself for full-time employment with the AJGA. Of the current 30 member staff 19 went through the internship. Previous employees and/or interns have moved on to positions with the PGA TOUR, USGA, LPGA TOUR, RCGA, and corporate sponsors.
