Midwest Network of Holocaust Educators

Columbus Torah Academy

proudly presents an innovative new

approach to Holocaust education

The Midwest Network of Holocaust Educators, in conjunction with the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation, has available an experienced panel of Holocaust educators.

For the past six years, Columbus Torah Academy has had in place an innovative Holocaust education curriculum for grades kindergarten through high school. It consists of a five day "Teach-In", during which teachers and students immerse themselves in a unique aspect of Holocaust learning. Materials have been tailored to the interests and abilities of each grade level.

For example, we do not teach the "horrors" of the Holocaust to elementary students, but rather emphasize the life of Jews in the time before this epoch occurred in Eastern and Western Europe.

With high school students, our curriculum incorporates several different media, such as presenting plays, investigating historical documents, reading fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, visiting art museums, and participating in a culminating art project.

Teachers from Columbus Torah Academy have presented pieces of our five day curriculum at a variety of seminars and conferences, including The Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts and the Central Ohio Social Studies Conference. We have also been requested to present at the National Conference of Teachers of English.

We are now offering our expertise in this field to the Central Ohio area educational community.

As innovators in the field of Holocaust education, we offer schools, other educational institutions, and private and public-sector organizations the opportunity to utilize our resources for teaching and learning about this important topic. We offer a wide range of curriculum modules and modalities which educators of all grade levels can utilize in their classroom settings.

Teacher-Training Programs

We have developed curriculum and teacher-training materials, for all grade levels, which we have used successfully on site for several years. This curriculum is presently available for educators’ use in the classroom.

In-School Presentation Programs

Columbus Torah Academy is now in a position to offer Holocaust education programs to the community-at-large. The material includes the philosophy behind Holocaust education, grade-level appropriate materials, and speakers for classroomm presentations. CTA educators will come into schools to present particular topics on a one-day basis.

A Speakers Bureau

In conjunction with the Community Relations Council, we have compiled a complete listing of speakers available as resources, including Holocaust survivors, Shoah subjects, and the children of survivors.

A Resource Center for Teachers

Information is available in the Resource Center on all aspects of Holocaust education. Our resources include films, fiction and non-fiction books, poetry, plays, internet websites, survivor testimony, Shoah Project materials, United States Holocaust Museum and Yad Vashem information. A newsletter will be published several times a year informing members of upcoming events, new materials, and additional resources.

Annual Seminar

Columbus Torah Academy, in conjuction with the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation, will offer an annual seminar for educators interested in our Holocaust Teach-In.

Midwest Network of Holocaust Educators

Rebbe Yehudah Lowy, an experienced graduate of the Yad Vashem Teacher Training Course, has conducted seminars in the Central Ohio area for the last five years. As an elementary and high school teacher, he presents a literature-based, grade appropriate approach to Holocaust education.

The Columbus Torah Academy, in conjunction with the Columbus Jewish Federation, offers these services and materials to the community-at-large. If interested, please contact either Rebbe Yehudah Lowy or Julie Moskowitz at Columbus Torah Academy at 864-0299.
