TOP PUBLIC eBOOK SITES:

  • University of California Press-- Middle Eastern Studies eBooks, as well as Classics, Literature, European History, etc. Excellent scholarly material.
  • eMedicine.com-- Full text, free and excellent medical textbooks.  Highly recommended.  Select books from the folders section (which takes a minute to load).  Both completed and in-progress books are useful. 
  • OnLine Books Page-- courtesy of University of Pennsylvania. 
  • Project Gutenberg-- an ambitious program to get all the important world literature online, more than 2,000 texts are included, and can be downloaded with reasonable ease. 
  • Alex Catalogue-- a collection of digital documents collected in the subject areas of English literature, American literature, and Western philosophy.

    THE BEST OF THE REST:

  • Bookwire-- hundreds on online Electronic Books are available along with book industry news, features, reviews, guides to literary events and author interviews.
  • ChapterOne-- the first chapters of over 130 current fiction and non-fiction titles, updated weekly. 
  • Classic Short Stories--some good reading that's short enough to read off the screen.  Authors include Saki, O.Henry, Twain, Balzac, Poe, DeMaupassant, etc. 
  • Electronic Literature Foundation(ELF)--produces advanced electronic texts to be used by students, scholars, and admirers of literature. There are 42 texts including the Divine Comedy, Jane Austen' s novels, and Jules Verne's novels. 
  • Emory Women Writers Resource Project-- a collection of edited and unedited texts by women writing in English from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century. 
  • Great Works of Western Civilization-- a very complete listing, with links to all of the works that are on the web. 
  • Hyperizons: hypertext fiction-- You may search for hypertext fiction by author, title or publisher and the site also includes links to theory & criticism, markets for and background about the genre. 
  • Internet Public Library of Online Texts-- searchable author, title and subject classification, over 10,000 texts are included. 
  • National Academy Press Reading Room-- 1000 full-text books, from the publisher of research from the National Academy of Science, National Institute of Medicine, etc. 
  • SCETI-- Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text & Image from the University of Pennsylvania provides the scholarly community with web access to virtual facsimiles of original texts, documents, and sources from Penn's collections. These include printed books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, broadsides, ephemera, and recorded sound. A beautiful site. 
  • Short Story Search--look for full texts of short stories on the net, by author, title, or, to some extent, subject.
