The Baylis Programme

The Baylis Programme is ENO's Education, Community and Outreach team, dedicated to taking ENO's skills and artists into the community, and to introducing opera to a wider public. Established in 1985, the Baylis Programme is based at the ENO works in Hackney, London.

Every year thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds are introduced to the work of English National Opera through the Baylis Programme's wide range of projects, courses and events. These include:

  • Schools projects: residencies led by professional artists, from primary to tertiary levels ; INSET training for teachers; and pre-performance talks and workshops for school groups.

  • A lively programme of events for individuals and family groups, including introductory workshops for families and for young people, and special events for patrons with disabilities.

  • The Baylis Programme runs two youth opera groups, Live Culture for 12-16 year olds and Live Wires for 8-12 year olds, and a year long performance skills course for adult singers, The Knack. Two further groups target the the Baylis programmme's local community in East London: the Hoxton Singers, an elders' choir, and The Works, a vocal group for 16-25 year olds.

  • The Baylis Programme invests in communities that traditionally do not have access to the arts, whether for cultural or economic reasons, to enable access for people of all ages to creative activity, skills-development and training opportunities.
