PA report accuses Israel of using depleted uranium against Palestinians

Occupied Jerusalem: 20 January/01 - A report issued by the Palestinian Authority environment ministry has accused the Israeli army of using shells containing depleted uranium against Palestinians in the last four months.

The report, which was published today, pointed out that Palestinian doctors began to discover abnormal deformities in many patients, especially those living in areas which often came under Israeli artillery and aerial bombardment.

The report said that abnormal symptoms were noticed on as many as 1500 Palestinians injured in Israeli bombardment and are now receiving hospitalization in many Arab countries, Iran and some European countries.

The symptoms, said the report, include abnormal lacerations, bone fragility, and wounds unresponsive to classical medical treatment.

The report didn't present absolute evidence to that effect, but called on the international community to help investigate the matter.

The Israeli occupation authorities have denied any use of depleted uranium against Palestinians, but admitted that other kinds of
internationally-banned weaponry, like cluster bombs and dom-dom bullets, were being used against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

As many as 400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli occupation troops and settlers since the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada on 28 September and around 13,000 others were injured - many seriously.
