Intershop and Sun Benchmark Results Raise the Bar for e-Business Systems

Intershop Enfinity 2 Receives Top Marks for Superior Scalability and Performance
in Recent Sun Microsystems Benchmark Testing

SAN FRANCISCO, December 18, 2000 – Intershop Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISHP; Neuer Markt: ISH), a leading provider of sell-side e-business applications, today released record benchmarking results for its flagship product Enfinity 2™. The results confirm Enfinity’s superior performance capabilities and demonstrate that the product can scale to accommodate the needs of fast-growing global companies. Working together in a strategic partnership, Sun and Intershop have created benchmarking, configuration and deployment solutions that address the demanding and complex needs of the enterprise customer.

Enfinity 2 is the newest version of Intershop’s enterprise-class product, which was first introduced in 1999. Since then, Intershop has signed on more than 200 Enfinity enterprise customers, including Shell, Hewlett-Packard, Bosch, Time Warner, and Motorola.

Results from intensive testing completed and certified by Sun Microsystems in its benchmark laboratory in Langen, Germany, prove that Intershop Enfinity 2 easily meets the demands of high-volume, high-traffic e-commerce environments. In the tested configuration, built to reflect a typical enterprise e-business scenario, Enfinity 2 processed more than 800,000 orders and more than 50 million requests in a single day. With other configurations and additional hardware, Enfinity 2 can produce even greater results. For perspective, the highly trafficked Amazon.com site had 1.6 million unique daily visitors during the first week of this year’s holiday shopping season.

“Companies looking for an e-commerce foundation must select a solution that meets current needs, but more important, will also be able to handle more traffic, more transactions, and more complexity, along with global expansion,” said Stephan Schambach, CEO of Intershop Communications. “Without a doubt, Intershop can deliver. Whether your company is processing 50 hits a day or 50 million, Intershop Enfinity has got you covered.”

“We rigorously tested the Enfinity product using simulated real world scenarios, and Intershop’s solution proved it is capable of performing in even the most demanding business environment,” said Rene Neumann, senior manager software partner at Sun Microsystems. “Intershop Enfinity 2 running on Sun Solaris sets a new standard for performance, scalability and functionality in the market today.”

"This impressive validation of Enfinity's performance and scalability from a third-party vendor is a testimony to its solid design and innovation," said Kent Allen, research director of e-Business at the Aberdeen Group. "Intershop Enfinity is a proven solution that enables businesses to benefit from conducting e-commerce through multiple channels. The market will be looking for more validation of this kind in the coming months."

In addition to these latest benchmark results, Forrester Research’s November TechRankings™ ranks Intershop Enfinity first among commerce platforms. Strategic alliances with industry leading systems integrators, including, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Sapient, Arthur Andersen, EDS, and Unisys, offer world-class integration support from over 4,000 trained consultants worldwide.
