Training Pipeline Information Update

This proposed CCT pipeline is not yet official, but represents the latest information and probably will not change.

Listed below are the current schools and locations prospective candidates for the Combat Control career field will spend the first 12 to 18-plus months of their life.  After completion of the Pipeline phase the Controller will enter the Advanced Skills Training (AST) phase at their first duty station --- Hurlburt Field, Florida.  Follow-on assignment (or retention at the 23rd STS) is yet to be determined.

Before being accepted into the program, the candidate must:

  • Be a volunteer
  • Be a male
  • Be a US citizen
  • Have a least a 53 in the General portion of the aptitude test
  • Pass the CCT physical ability and stamina (PAS) test:
    - 500 yard swim under 15:00 minutes, 30 minute break
    - Minimum 42 push ups, 2 minute break
    - Minimum 50 sit ups, 2 min break
    - Minimum 6 Chin ups, 10 minute break
    - 1.5 mile run under 11:30 minutes
    (All exercises done in two minute time frame)
  • Pass a Class III flight physical

Pipeline:

35 Weeks, Various Locations

Combat Control Orientation
1 Week, Lackland AFB, TX


1 week orientation to CCT at Lackland. Course under development will include exercise physiology, success oriented focus, nutrition, training techniques, history and CCT fundamentals. 

Combat Control Operator Course
15.5 weeks, Keesler AFB, MS


This course teaches aircraft recognition and performance, air navigation aids, weather, airport traffic control, flight assistance service, communication procedures, conventional approach control, radar procedures, and air traffic rules. This is the same course that all other air traffic controllers attend. This is the heart of a Combat Controller's job.

Must pass increased PT test to graduate:

  • 1000 meter swim < 26:00
  • 64 push ups
  • 75 sit ups
  • 12 chin ups
  • 3 mile run < 22:30

U.S. Army Airborne School
3 weeks, Fort Benning, GA


Here you learn the basic parachuting skills required to infiltrate an objective area by static line airdrop. This course includes ground operations week, tower week, and jump week where you make 5 actual parachute jumps. Personnel who complete this training are awarded the basic parachutist rating and are allowed to wear the parachutist's wings.

U.S. Air Force Basic Survival School
2.5 weeks, Fairchild AFB, WA


This course teaches basic survival techniques for remote areas--using minimal equipment. This includes instruction of principles, procedures, equipment, and techniques, which enable individuals to survive, regardless of climatic conditions or unfriendly environments, and return home.

Combat Control School
13 weeks, Pope AFB, NC


This course provides final CCT qualifications. Training includes physical training, small unit tactics, land navigation, communications, assault zones, demolitions, fire support and field operations including parachuting. At the completion of this course, each graduate is awarded the scarlet beret and CCT flash.

Advanced Skills Training (AST):
approximately One Year, Hurlburt Field, FL


This phase of CCT training will be a combination of IFAM and attendance at the courses listed below.  IFAM is:

The Special Tactics- Initial Familiarization (IFAM) course which is conducted at Hurlburt Field, Fl has been up and running since early 1997.  The program was established to familiarize newly assigned or recently transferred PJs and CCTs with the Special Tactics core mission. During this course, students are introduced or reacquainted to Special Tactics techniques such as airfield seizure operations, combat search and rescue (CSAR), Rigging Alternate Method-Zodiac (RAMZ) and call-for-fire missions for fixed and rotary wing aircraft. We also cover numerous Special Tactics subjects in both classroom and field exercises.

U.S. Army Combat Divers School
4 weeks, Key West, FL


Here you become a combat diver and learn to use SCUBA and the draegger to infiltrate areas undetected. This course provides training to depths of 130 ft, stressing development of maximum underwater mobility under various operating conditions.

U.S. Navy Underwater Egress Training
1 day, Pensacola NAS, FL


This course teaches how to safely escape from an aircraft that has ditched in the water. Instruction includes principles, procedures, and techniques necessary to get out of a sinking aircraft. Training requires personnel to actually experience water entry in a training device and perform underwater egress.

U.S. Army Military Free Fall Parachutist School
5 weeks, Ft. Bragg, NC. and Yuma Proving Grounds, AZ


This course instructs free fall parachuting (HALO) using the high performance ram air canopy. The course provides wind tunnel training, in-air instruction focusing on student stability, aerial maneuvers, air sense, and parachute opening procedures. Each student receives a minimum of 30 free fall jumps including 2 day and 2 night jumps with supplemental oxygen, rucksack, and load bearing equipment.
