The St. Clair Children's Advocacy Center
operates The Children's Place in Pell City,
Alabama as a resource and training facility. The mission of the center is to foster
family development and enhance family functioning by coordinating services for children
and families involved in child abuse. The center also facilitates cooperation between
agencies, offers training for professionals, and provides education that will increase
public awareness and prevent child abuse in the county. HOW
DID THE CHILDREN'S PLACE GET STARTED?
The county's
District Attorney's Office, The Department of Human Resources, and Friends of Children, a
volunteer child abuse prevention organization, joined together by investing time and
resources to make the center a reality. In 1993, a house designed specifically to meet the
need of the center was donated through the generosity of a St. Clair County family. In
addition, many other civic groups, churches, and individuals have given support to the
center through donated items, financial contributions, and volunteer time. The center was
fully operational in July of 1994.
HOW DOES THE CENTER OPERATE?
The
Children's Place is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is subject to
a yearly audit and conforms with generally accepted accounting principles. Several funding
sources are used, including, but not limited to: Children's Trust Fund, local
contributions, program service fees, state appropriations, and United Way of Central
Alabama. The center operates under a set of bylaws and articles of incorporation. The
governing body is a dedicated board of directors who participates actively in
decision making for the center.
