Seeking to inform children
about abuse and empowering through acquisition of various skills is the purpose of
these primary prevention educational classes taught in both St. Clair County
and Pell City School Systems. Children in grades K-8 are the target audience for
these classes, presented by volunteers who are recruited, trained, and screened by The Children's Place
staff. Programs utilize age appropriate materials and
incorporate short discussions, videos, flip charts and various other reinforcement
activities. Follow-up materials which reiterate classroom discussion and help to build
character are provided to the teacher for
use at a later time. Some of the topics covered include: conflict resolution, self
esteem, respect and social/emotional education. Braveheart Bear makes an apprearance
to each kindergarten class with a presentation on bullies.
The Children's Place maintains a resource
library that may be utilized by school personnel, parents, churches, and other
community groups. Over 130 resources are available in the library including, but not
limited to abuse and neglect information, adolescent development, decision-making,
self-esteem, assertiveness techniques, date rape and parenting. We also have training
materials and conduct workshops for adults who work with and care for children.
A Children's Place Referral Directory is available for
purchase. With over 500 entries, provides information regarding children's services
availab>le specifically throughout the county and more generally statewide. The
directory is available for purchase.
