On May 19 President Clinton announced 310 new 21st Century Community Learning Center grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Twenty-three grants for a total of $11,504,438 were awarded to schools and districts in AEL's region (Kentucky--10, Tennessee--7, Virginia--3, West Virginia--3). AEL conducted and/or presented regional workshops in each of the four states and provided application review and project evaluation services between January and March to assist district and school applicants. The 23 grants in AEL's four-state region will fund 99 centers (67 rural and 32 urban), which will operate extended learning programs serving more than 23,928 students and 26,420 community members with afterschool; weekend; and/or summer academic, recreational, and cultural programming.
