Teaching Mathematics in Grades 5 and 6:
Preparing for Gateway Success

A Summer Institute for Teachers of Mathematics

This three-day institute is designed to increase content knowledge and encourage the use of hands-on teaching methods among teachers of fifth- and sixth-grade mathematics.

Activities and content are aligned with the Tennessee State Curriculum Frameworks and were chosen to help teachers provide students with the Level I skills they will need before enrolling in Algebra I.

Participants will also develop an understanding of the Tennessee curriculum frameworks for the middle-grades level and how they relate to the Gateway Assessment Program.

Hands-on Teaching Activities Will Be Modeled and Discussed for These Topics

  • fractions and decimals
  • ratio and proportion
  • patterns
  • graphs
  • transition to algebra
  • algebra
  • problem wolving
  • mathematics in science
