Early Release Procedures for Inclement Weather

Definition

• Elementary buses will run one hour early. Secondary buses will pick up students as soon as elementary routes are completed.
• Parents may pick up their child(ren) whenever they wish.
• Non-bused students remain in classes until normal release time.
• School principals may use their discretion for employees to leave as long as student supervision is not compromised.

Procedure

• Call SFPS Transportation Detpartment at 989-5541.
• Listen to local radio and television stations.

• Santa Fe Public School s Superintendent, General Service Department, and Office of Public Information monitor weather reports regularly for the purpose of anticipating a delay, early release or a cancellation of school when conditions prevent the safe transportation of students.
• If weather reports indicate a deterioration of conditions, General Service members actually drive the streets of Santa Fe. The areas they cover include the roads that buses must travel to pick up students. Their routes go from El Dorado to La Cienega to Tesuque.
• After discussions and with input from stateas well as county and city road crews, the General Service Department makes a recommendation to the Superintendent.
• The Superintendent, who has been monitoring the weather on the Weather Channel and local sources, makes the final decision between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m..
• If a two-hour delay is decided, the Director of Public Information is called as soon as the decision is made. The Director calls local radio and television stations to notify them of the decision. If there is no one at the radio station, a message is left on the answer machine that is usually followed by actual contact later in the morning.

Two Hour Delay Procedure

• Based on weather information and road conditions, Santa Fe Public Schools will will call a 2 hour delay of the school day when there are hazardous road conditions that compromise the ability to transport students safely.
• Buses will run 2 hours later than normal and schools will open 2 hours later than normal start time.
• Morning Kindergarten will be canceled on all 2-hour delays.
• School employees will report to work by 8:30 a.m. or as close to this time considering road conditions.

• After a 2-hour delay has been called and weather conditions have continued to deteriorate, the Superintendent may call a cancellation of school.
• The notice of cancellation will be made between 7:00 and 8:00 A.M.
• All schools will be closed. and time will be made up according to provisions in school calendar.

Note: In the event that there is no Early Release, but snow conditions continue to deteriorate, parents may pick up their child(ren) at their discretion, but dismissal for non-bus students will be at the normal time. As a safety precaution, buses will begin pick up of students approximately 15-30 minutes early. The extra time will allow drivers to proceed slowly and with caution.
