ALABAMA SCHOOLS GET NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR MEETING FAMILY EXPECTATIONS

Twenty-one Alabama School Systems have been recognized as meeting the needs of families choosing schools by School Match. School Match is the nation’s largest school selection consulting firm. The 2000 What Parents Want Awards were given to about 15% of the 15,620 school systems in the United States. The 21 Alabama systems represent just over 16% of the state’s 128 public school systems.

Second Round Of Reading Excellence Grants Available

The Alabama Reading Excellence Program is providing competitive reading literacy grants to eligible local education agencies to fund Tutorial Assistance Subgrants. The purpose of these grants is to improve the capacity of eligible local education agencies to have every student reading well by third grade. Submission deadline for proposals is March 10, 2000.

Judge OKs Amended Consent Decree In Prospective Teacher Testing Case

Basic skills testing of all prospective teachers could return to Alabama in 2002 after an absence of more than a decade. In a fairness hearing today, U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson gave preliminary approval to an amended consent decree that will end 18 years of litigation about testing prospective teachers enrolled in Alabama colleges of education prior to their certification.

Alabama Department of Education Issues 1998-99 Report Card on Schools

Gov. Don Siegelman, the state Board of Education and State Superintendent of Education Ed Richardson today released the fourth annual report card on education in Alabama. Today’s release marks the fourth year report cards have been issued on each of Alabama’s 128 school systems, and the third year for each of the state’s approximately 1,300 schools.

State Board of Education Receives Recommendations For Textbooks

The State Board of Education at its October meeting received recommendations for adoption of textbooks for driver and traffic safety and English language arts for grades K-12. The English language arts recommendations include textbooks for English (grammar and composition), speech, spelling, handwriting, dictionaries, journalism and debate.

Hoover Teacher Is 1999-2000 Alabama State Teacher Of The Year

Ann Dominick Hardin, a fourth grade teacher at South Shades Crest Elementary School in the Hoover city school system, is the 1999-2000 Alabama State Teacher of the Year and the Elementary Teacher of the Year. District 4 state Board of Education member and board vice president Ethel Hall and state Superintendent of Education Ed Richardson surprised Hardin with the announcement Thursday at the school.
