HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

Core Program, Grades 9 and 10

1999-2000

At the conclusion of each quarter, freshmen and sophomores will be responsible for a written activity report reflective of the NYS Standards for Physical Education.


Core Program, Grades 11 and 12

Selection of two activities per marking period including physical fitness, advanced levels of team and individual sports, plus any of the following:
Bowling (Step) Aerobics Stickball
Archery Racquetball Weight Training
Orienteering Golf Fitness Jogging
Social Dancing Fencing Tae Bo

In addition to class activities, 11th and 12th graders will be required to take first aid during the second marking period. Written and participation term projects will also be required to be completed during the third and fourth marking periods.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING PROCEDURES

Physical Education at Glen Cove High School is an integral part of the total education of each individual student. A varitey of team sports, individual sports and leisure activities are offered with an emphasis on physical fitness, health and wellness.

The grading system for all students in Physical Education is as follows:
PARTICIPATION: 60 points of grade based on regular preparation and participation
KNOWLEDGE: 20 points of grade based on cognitive knowledge assessment
SKILL: 20 points of grade based on skill assessment. This includes effort, attitude, sportsmanship and behavior.

Students are responsible for making up classes or work missed. Teachers will provide reasonsble opportunities for students to complete make-up work in a timely fashion. All make-up work should be completed within two weeks at the end of each marking period, with the exception of the last quarter.

Students who are medically excused for two (2) weeks or longer should see the school nurse for a form to be completed by your doctor, recommending activities for participation. Daily medical excuses will require make-up work or limited participation as doctor recommended.

For your safety and protection you are required to follow these regulations:

  1. Proper dress- shorts, T-shirt, socks, tied sneakers, sweats
  2. No loose jewelry (dangling earrings)
  3. Remove glasses or wear safety straps
  4. No gum, candy, food or drinks in the gym
  5. No extra students allowed in physical education classes
  6. Keep all items locked in your locker at all times- don't bring valuables or large sums of money to school
  7. Take care of all physical education equipment and use it only for its intended purpose
  8. Report all injuries to your physical education teacher immediately
  9. All students will be provided with a school lock- no personal locks allowed in the locker rooms
  10. Locker rooms will be locked during classes after attendance is taken
  11. All students are responsible for knowing these regulations and others pertaining to physical education per Glen Cove Handbook 1999-2000 edition
