Shortly after the Civil
War, Kay's grandfather and one of his brothers came through this area herding cattle on a
Charles Goodnight cattle drive. They decided that this looked like fine cattle country and
determined to come back. About 20,000 of the original 50,000 acres that the Funk family
settled are still being operated by Dale and Kay, her brother, and her cousins.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department say that a 12 mile
strip through this valley is one of the prime game areas in the state. Past hunters to
this Centennial Ranch have spoken of the abundance and variety of game they have seen and
go home with their buck only to return year after year for another good hunt.
