The World

The Game World in warcraft 3 will be quite different then most strategy games, instead of having to do campaigns and levels has such, you will be just doing missions, every time you complete one, you gain access to a different part of the map, for example, you beat a "unfriendly unit" and you gain a key, that key can be used to open a gate somewhere in the map. So this does show that blizzard is going more to the RPG (Role Playing Game) type.

Combat

The combat in Warcraft 3 will be more like a RPG game then a strategy game, instead of commanding 200 units, you will control a few. Because you will only have a few units in you're possession, you will need to play "smarter" and be more cautious then in most strategy type games.

NPC  

NPC's will play a big role to make you advanced through the map, giving tips or information on a certain subject, giving you tools or items that will help you in you're quest for victory. Without these NPC's you would be able to get threw any section of the map. For example, there is a gate and you need to get threw, you go see an NPC and he might give you a key or a rope to get over the gate.

Tech Tree

The tech tree will be quite smaller then in most strategy games, you won't exactly be able to make too many new buildings has such, but you will have opportunities to upgrade them to a more advanced form. When a building is upgraded you gain access to a new type of unit or unit upgrade.

Resource management

It is unclear how exactly we will manage the resources but we do have a statement from Rob Pardo

"The current resource model is this: In the early game the player will be able to get started much faster by using his/her hero and recruiting a small number of troops and exploring in the game map. The player will attack/kill neutral creatures to gain gold (much like an RPG). This allows the player to be exploring/adventuring at the same time as [resource gathering], rather than popping back and forth between town and hero. Later in the game, the players will find building nodes on the game map where they may build different structures including docks, farms, lumber mill and towers. These buildings will cost gold to build and will be maintained automatically. Many of the buildings will produce gold for the player."
