Rex Elementary School overlooks Grand Avenue, the main east/west artery of the city. The pale yellow brick building has welcomed students every weekday morning since it was opened in September of 1958. A "commons" area was added in 1980. Throughout its 38 year history, Rex has served the elementary students living within walking distance of the school. On occasion, students have been bused from north of the city or for special education, although being bused has not been a typical experience for most Rex students.
The student enrollment at Rex for the 1999-2000 school year is 485 boys and girls. There are 33certified staff members and 12 paraprofessionals that work with the students at Rex.
The mission of the Rex school community is to assure that all students have a nurturing, accepting, and safe environment for learning the skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary for productive living in a changing, democratic, multicultural society.
The staff at Rex School believe…
Every Child's life is touched by the lives of others. The combined effort, free exchange of ideas, and communication among parents, community and schools effectively educate our children. Learning is an ongoing lifelong process. All children can learn. All children should experience success. All children should have the confidence to make a mistake without losing their dignity. All children have unique characteristics and needs. In accountability of behaviors, actions and choices. In high expectations appropriate for each child to promote quality performance. In quality teachers dedicated to all of the above belief statements.
