boarding

This is a view of students changing classes through the Senior School Quad. Seen in the distance are student residences, set amid a stand of Gary Oak trees.

When you're in boarding you find true friends, really good ones because you live with them. It's different when you live with people; you see both sides of them...

Senior School Quad
Winslow Barnacle House entrance "To educate the whole person"
is a key element of the education which we offer.

The school is a community where both day and boarding students form friendships they will maintain for their entire lives. Teaching and learning occur in every facet of the school, from the dormitories to the dining hall, from the locker rooms to the laboratories. Issues of morality and ethics, of social, spiritual and ethical growth are addressed. Students have many opportunities to learn the skills of compromise and negotiation, of patience and tolerance, of tact and diplomacy. Strength of character, self-discipline, and personal integrity are of prime importance.

Direct contact with individuals from different countries and cultures brings a profound learning experience. At SMUS, we take great pride and pleasure from the diverse nature of our student body. Students leave SMUS well prepared for life beyond the campus gates. They take their place in a changing society and accept the challenge of influencing that change. They do so with a confidence and independence that has been part of their preparation. This is the gift of the boarding experience.

Student residences are new and very attractive. Winslow and Barnacle House (shown) house sixty students from twenty nations. There are about 200 students between grades 8 and 12 living in boarding.
It's a wonderful experience!

Lifelong friends
I discovered after about a week that I had thirty closets, thirty tutors, thirty mothers, and thirty sets of ears willing and ready to listen to anything, at anytime, on any given day.

I must admit that when I arrived at SMUS, I was looking forward to boarding life, and truly, it has lived up to all my expectations. I have enjoyed meeting new friends from all over the world.

Dining in Brown Hall Dining in Brown Hall
Meals are provided in Brown Hall and are served three times daily. On Saturday and Sunday, breakfast and lunch are replaced by a single extended brunch. The food service staff pride themselves in the quality and excellence of their meals. Both lunch and dinnertime meals are served with a salad bar and include both a vegetarian soup and entree.

Ethnic nights give everyone a chance to share the foods and tastes of their home country. Students get together and help create party style meals. Sometimes entertainment is provided as well. Brown Hall is a great spot for students to meet in the evenings. It's close to the Barker Library, and each evening at 9:00 pm, snacks are served.
