Upper and lowercase characters
|
If you use uppercase characters in your search, your results will only
look for the words with uppercase characters as you have written them.
If you just use lowercase however, the engine will look for both upper
and lowercase versions of the word. So when you enter 'chairman' the engine
will look for both 'chairman' and 'Chairman'.

 |
Phrases
|
If you type in a phrase, for example, 'chairman's report', the search
engine will look for the exact phrase 'chairman's report'. If you want
the search engine to look for pages containing both those words, but not
necessarily as a phrase, then you can do so using our search engine's
advanced search features.

Advanced Searches

AND, OR and NOT
As well as simply typing in a keyword or a phrase into the Railtrack search
engine, you can use the words AND, OR and NOT to perform more advanced
searches.
For example, if you want to search for pages with the words 'chairman'
and 'report' in (but not necessarily together as a phrase), simply enter
'chairman AND report' in the search field.
If you want to search for pages with the word 'chairman' or the word
'report', enter 'chairman OR report'.
If you want to search for pages with the word 'chairman' but not the
word 'report', enter 'chairman NOT report'.
Remember, you must type the words AND, OR, and NOT in uppercase for
them to work in this way. In the unlikely event of you wanting to search
for the word 'AND' (or any of the other special words) in a document,
you can turn off its functions using the / (backslash) character. So
entering '/AND' will search the Railtrack site for pages containing
the word 'AND' in uppercase characters.

Wildcards
|
You can use the wildcard character, * (asterisk) to broaden your search.
For example, if you are not sure whether Railtrack has a chairman, a chairwoman
or a chairperson, you can search for all pages containing words beginning
with 'chair' simply by entering 'chair*'. |
