DESCRIPTION: The styling is simple yet attractive. The fascia is satin black, there's a large blue LED which (in theory at least) provides disc illumination of the mid-mount loading tray. You get basic buttons up front but not full menu access, as delivered by some competitors. The rear panel is fairly rudimentary. There are no Scarts and just a single composite and 5-Video output. You do get two analogue audio feeds, plus coaxial and optical digital ones. There's also an NTSC/PAL/Auto switch to match your television standard to the output of the player. Although the presentation is basic, this player packs everything you need for navigating DVD. Switchable aspect ratio, multiple languages, parental control and digital outputs are all accessed via graphical menus. Curiously, some of the defaults (such as PCM/ AC-3 selection) only appear when a disc is loaded with the transport set at stop. Gimmicks include virtual Dolby Surround and two 'enhanced' picture modes. Animation gives 'increased chroma', Cinema essentially cuts the contrast. You also have the usual gamut of trick play modes including still frame advance, slow play, repeat play and random playback. So how does this deck fare 'under the bonnet'? Clearly, Pioneer has taken image quality more seriously than most. In terms of frequency response it's very good, both on composite an S-Video feeds. Video jitter is low and the inherent signal-to-noise ratio is much better than that found on the DVL-909 DVD/laser disc combi.
