Pre-Operative Instructions

1.   Do not eat, drink, eat candy, chew gum or smoke the day of surgery. (This means from midnight on). You may brush your teeth but do not take sips of water.

2.   Have a shower or bath and wash your hair the day before or the morning of your surgery.

3.   Remove any make-up and nail polish prior to coming to the hospital... this includes toe nail polish. 

4.   Please leave all valuables at home... no jewellery (rings, necklaces, earrings and anklets)... please do not bring money to the hospital the day of surgery.  DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES.

5.   If staying overnight in the hospital, arrange for a family member or friend to bring all luggage to the Pre-Surgery Clinic.  Please bring personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, deodorant, tissues, etc.

6.   Wear comfortable clothing to hospital (example, track suits).

7.    Confirm the time of surgery the day prior to surgery by calling your surgeon's office.  Arrive at the Pre-Surgery Clinic at the appointed time for all of your appointments and for surgery.  Bring your white hospital card, your health card and any insurance information.  Please reconfirm your insurance coverage with your employer.  Private and Semi-private coverage may not be covered under your insurance plan for rehabilitation care.

8.    If being discharged the same day of surgery, ensure that you are accompanied home and that someone stays with you overnight.  Do not drive for 24 hours.

9.    Discharge time is 0900 hrs for admitted patients.  Please arrange your ride home for that time.

10.  Relatives who have made arrangements to speak to the surgeon after surgery should wait in the 3C Waiting Area.  After speaking to the surgeon, proceed to the appropriate nursing unit, eg. 1B, 1C, 3C, Surgical Day Care.

11.   If you have breathing problems, and take puffers, please bring them with you.

Paediatric Pre-Operative Instructions

1.  Do not let your child eat, drink, eat candy or chew gum the day of the surgery (this means from midnight on).  Keep children away from water as they may try to drink unless otherwise directed by physician.

2.  Have a shower/bath and wash child's hair the evening before surgery.

3.  Remove any make-up and nail polish prior to coming to the hospital.  This includes toe nail polish.

4.  Please leave all valuables at home.  No jewellery (rings, necklaces, earrings and anklets).  Children with long hair should have their hair tied back with elastic bands... no metal.

5.  If staying overnight in the hospital, arrange for a family member to bring all luggage and personal items to hospital after the surgery.  Do not bring luggage to the Pre-Surgery Clinic or 1C until after surgery.

6.  Wear comfortable clothing to the hospital.  (example Track suits).

7.  Confirm the time of surgery the day prior to surgery date by calling your surgeon's office.  Arrive at the Pre-Surgery Clinic at the appointed time for all appointments and for surgery.  Bring your child's white hospital card, Health Card and any insurance information with you.

8.  Mother, father, or legal guardian should bring the child to the hospital.   A parent should stay in the hospital the entire day of surgery.  One parent is allowed to stay overnight if the child is being admitted.

9.  Children being discharged from hospital the same day of surgery need a parent and another adult to take the child home (one person to drive and one person to take care of  the child).

10.  Discharge time is 0900 hours for admitted patients unless otherwise directed.   Please arrange a ride home for that time.

11.  Please wait in the 3C Waiting Area if you wish to apeak to the surgeon following surgery.  After speaking to the surgeon, please wait for the Recovery Room staff to meet with you.

12.  If you have breathing problems and take puffers, please bring them with you.
