Pre-natal Education Program
Having a baby at The Credit Valley Hospital is a special event, and we treat it that way. Our prental education program offers several programmes to meet the expectant families needs. Our family-centred maternity care enables family members to share the experience of birth from the very beginning.
1. The Basic Program
a) Early Pregnancy: consists of two classes beginning in the third to fourth month of pregnancy and includes; the unborn baby's development; physical and emotional changes of pregnancy; nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles in pregnancy; relaxation; hospital tour.
b) Post-partum and parenting preparation: consists of two classes beginning in the fifth to sixth month of pregnancy and includes: physical changes and care of mother's post-partum; father's role; layette; childhood illnesses/immunization; relaxation; normal newborn characteristics and procedures; adjustment to new roles as parents.
c) Childbirth preparation: consists of four classes beginning in the seventh to eighth month of pregnancy and includes: labour and birth; relaxation and breathing techniques to enhance comfort in labour; initiating breastfeeding; medical procedures and analgesia/anaesthesia; Caesarean birth; role of father or support person in labour; immediate post-partum mother/baby.
2. Breast feeding
Breast feeding preparation: recommended for all parents who plan to breast feed their newborn. This educational session is two hours and will include: benefits of breast feeding; how breast feeding works; initiating breast feeding; practical tips; technique; video presentation.
3. Refresher
Refresher childbirth: this series of three classes is designed for experienced parents expecting a second or later baby and includes: review of labour and birth; comfort measures in labour including a review of relaxation and breathing techniques. (The sibling class is recommended for families taking the refresher childbirth program).
4. Sibling
Sibling Preparation: this ninety minute class is designed to help prepare for the arrival of a new brother or sister and includes: story-time and sibling video; family tour of the maternity unit; parents discussion group; play-time with child's favourite doll or bear; newborn visit and discussion of healthy newborn.
5. Pre/post-natal fitness
Keeping fit: this class is recommended for mothers during pregnancy and in the months following birth: keeping in shape through exercises led by a fitness expert.
6. Early pregnancy tour
Refer to (a) early pregnancy. Meet in the lobby, bring a snack and pillows.
Registration:
Families may enroll in any of the childbirth classes. Early registration is recommended to ensure a convenient date.

Program Fees: Childbirth Preparation Programs
1. Basic Program (8 classes) $125.
Post Partum/Parenting, childbirth preparation $100.
Weekend Series: Post Partum/Parenting, childbirth preparation $100.
Early Pregnancy, 2 classes and hospital tour $30.
2. Breatfeeding $20.
3. Refresher $60.
Refresher weekend series $50.
4. Sibling
first child $25
each additional child $10.
5. Keeping fit $10.
Fee Payment
A $10 coupon is issued when registering for full Basic Series. This coupon can be used towards any other class of your choice.
Payment for classes must be received in Financial Services 4 weeks prior to beginning of classes. Refunds will only be given for medical reasons.
Deliver payment to Financial Services, Accounts Receivable, The Credit Valley Hospital, 2200 Eglinton Avenue West, Mississauga, Ontario L5M 2N1. Make cheque payable to "The Credit Valley Hospital" - Prenatal classes. Parking is not included. However, monthly parking passes are available through patient accounts.
