ResScale: Upscaling of Reservoir Data

This program provides upscaling tools to easily coarsen very large reservoir models to sizes acceptable to commercial fluid reservoir simulator. Using ResScale, these large models can be manipulated quite easily. However, the variety of algorithms for determining the upscaled grid and calculating the upscaled reservoir properties gives the user the flexibility to create models are upscaled optimally for the given situation. ResScale allows the user to easily:

  1. Rank the realizations generated in ResMod using a single phase particle tracker. This can be done very quickly and a large number of realizations ranked in hours. The idea is then to only perform full simulation (including history matching) on a small number of realizations that are representative of the range of uncertainty.
  2. Generate an optimal grid that captures where most of the displacement occurs by preserving a greater number of grid nodes in such areas while coarsening grids in less active areas. Errors due to upscaling are thereby kept to a minimum in the most important fluid flow zones.
  3. Upscale the dense 3-D property grids generated in ResMod using any of a variety of powerful upscaling algorithms. Upscaling methods provided in ResScale include: straightforward power averaging, flux based upscaling techniques, grid renormalization, streamline upscaling of effective properties and relative permeabilites (in development).
