ResFlow Streamline Fluid-Flow Simulation
ResFlow© is a lightning-fast multiphase black-oil flow simulator. Shown above is an oil saturation model. By utilizing a newly developed streamline formulation, ResFlow produces results 10 to 1000 times faster than conventional simulators. In addition to incredible speedups, the technique also minimizes numerical dispersion and grid orientation effects. In next generation streamline simulation, the pressure computation and flow calculations are decoupled. The simulator computes pressures and streamlines, then calculates flow along streamlines. The high speeds are derived from the pressure calculation being performed much less often than is required in conventional simulation. Because flow is computed along streamlines, grid orientation effects and numerical dispersion are minimized. ResFlow's streamline formulation offers vast improvements over older streamtube techniques. Unlike the older streamtubes, ResFlow calculates streamlines completely in 3D as the figure below shows and models cross-streamline phenomena. Gravity and capillary pressure effects are included.
Current reservoir modeling techniques are commonly producing reservoir models that are too fine for current conventional simulation capabilities. But through the speed and accuracty of next-generation streamline simulation, our models now can be simulated directly, without upscaling. Applications include direct simulation of large models, screening of multiple-realization sets of stochastic models , and many situations where speedups over conventional simulations are valuable.
