Part number school

Out of all BMW part numbers 99.9% have a typical pattern. The usual pattern is 11-11-1-111-111. When you give a part number to someone, make sure it's broken into it's proper structure. For people that speak and think in part numbers, it's hard to understand when someone say," I need 13641468812. No, you need 13-64-1-468-812. If someone wrote you a note and it looked like this," yourmomcalledcallherathome" would you go nuts? Now that you know the structure, you can learn the number groups.

The first two numbers of a part number are the most important, this will determine what category the part goes into.

If you find any errors, or missing data PLEASE let me know. webmaster@justbmws.com

11

11-00-0-000-000

This section is for motor parts. Most of this section is long block parts (internal engine components). Also this section has motor mounts, hoses, fans, gaskets, water pumps and thermostats. If you want to get really crazy you can go to the second two numbers. The second two numbers are sections of the group. For example, sections (11-13-0-000-000 ) contain oil pan parts, gaskets, oil pans, drain plugs, etc. This structure works through all the BMW models .

12

12-00-0-000-000

Engine electrical parts. Distributors, caps, rotors, wires, spark plugs, alternators, starters etc. For example...starters are in section 12-41-0-000-000

13

Fuel delivery systems. This group includes fuel injectors, carburetors, mechanical fuel pumps, fuel distributors, fuel filters, air flow meters, idle control valves, air filters, intake components etc.

14-15

This section is not used, maybe they will use 14&15 for stealth parts sometime in the future?

16

16-00-0-000-000

Gas tanks, electric fuel pumps, senders, etc. The gas tanks are 16-11-0-000-000.

17

17-00-0-000-000

Radiators, fan shrouds, expansion tanks, transmission cooling lines, fan blade etc. The radiators are 17-11-0-000-000

18

18-00-0-000-000

Exhaust system. Mufflers, down pipes, hangers, gaskets etc. Sometimes things you think should be in one section will show up in another section. Example, catalytic converters are considered part of the motor, so they go in section 11. You might think they would be in section 18 with the exhaust? Why do they do this? Who knows?

19-20

Another stealth part sections. Nothing in here yet.
